Coco & Clair Clair - 'Kate Spade'

Fresh and hot off the press, Coco & Clair Clair announce new single ‘Kate Spade’ ahead of their new album ‘Girl’, due for release on the 30th of August.

Iconic duo Coco & Clair Clair (Claire Toothill and Taylor Nave) glided their way into the land of pop-rap in 2017 with the release of their debut project ‘P.O.S.H.’ Taking a modern yet nostalgic twist on the genre, they found themselves in the middle of TikTok fame when their singles ‘Pretty’, ‘Pop Star’, and ‘Crushcrushcrush’ became trending audios. With the majority of TikTok users inevitably having come across a video using the songs at least once in their many hours of scrolling, there’s an undeniable excitement when it comes to the duo’s new release, ‘Kate Spade’.

Starting with notes oddly reminiscent of 70s and 80s arcade game soundtracks, the single explores Coco & Clair Clair’s rhythmically hypnotic lyrics and uniquely nostalgic sounds – and as always, is packed full of distorted synths. Speaking on the track, Toothill and Nave say “‘Kate Spade’ was one of the first songs we finished for the album after a night out in Amsterdam. It’s a little naughty and a little catty, but overall, it’s meant to be uplifting. Big up yourself vibes because there's always gonna be someone out there who wants what you have.”

Wanting to tweak the direction in which they approached songwriting and producing for this album, Coco & Clair Clair embraced all aspects of what they previously enjoyed from their releases and maximised it to a 100. Having used lyrics that the pair had come up with years prior to its release, it’s great to see artists blossoming in real time from their past ideas and refining them into something even better.

While still maintaining their instantly recognisable vocals, beats, and wonderfully candid intros and outros, ‘Kate Spade’ mirrors this idea of a cleaner, more intimate sound - it’s fresh, sonically unique, with a sugary sweet tang. The perfect mixture of boldly confident lyrics and nonchalant rapping rhythms makes the new single a certified empowerment bop for the summer.

With the release of the duo’s new album ‘Girl’ on the horizon, ‘Kate Spade’ (and neighbouring single ‘Aggy’) are keeping fans well-fed during the wait – and with the promised new twist to their approach for this project, it’s clear to say that it won’t be one to skip.
