Soccer Mommy - 'M'

Soccer Mommy’s ‘M’ is a superb but devastating return to her roots.

Soccer Mommy, the musical project created by the 27 year old Sophie Allison, has just announced ‘Evergreen’, her anticipated fourth album slated for release on October 25th through Loma Vista Recordings. The announcement of this new album is accompanied by the release of lead single, ‘M’, which arrives with a music video directed by Anna Pollack.

‘M’ marks a return to the sound that initially captivated Soccer Mommy's fans, continuing with the raw and intimate lyrics and organic sounds of her earlier works. Following the experimental production and synths of her previous album, ‘Sometimes, Forever’, ‘M’ is a stripped-back and organic exploration of grief and loss, with Allison’s song writing and melodies taking centre stage once again.

The song is characterized by its use of acoustic guitars, complemented by lush strings which culminate in an evocative and expansive outro lead by flutes. The instrumental takes us into a beautiful sonic journey, further enhancing the emotional impact of the song. The lyrics are filled with melancholy and nostalgia, capturing the essence of grief. Lyrics such as, “I feel you even though you're gone, and I don't mind talking to empty halls, 'cause I miss you like a loyal dog, waiting by the door to hear the lock turn,” expresses the difficulties of missing someone that’s not coming back and accepting that. In a recent press release, Allison discusses the themes of the song and album. “She recognizes that staying so devoted to something that’s gone could be a problem, but for right now, it’s the best she’s got.”

This release served as a perfectly crafted bridge between Soccer Mommy’s past and present offering a glimpse into the introspective and heartfelt direction of Allison’s forthcoming album. Fans of Soccer Mommy will find comfort in this return to her roots, while new listeners will be introduced to the raw, emotional depth that defines her artistry. She explains that “during the three-year span since finishing Sometimes, Forever and beginning Evergreen, she learned that loss is not a monolith. Some days are brutal and others are beautiful, as you take what you have gained from someone who is no longer here and try to carry it ahead, a talisman for whatever may come.”

In essence, ‘M’ is a superb, though devastating return to her roots and a reminder of why we fell in love with her music in the first place, reaffirming her place in the current musical landscape.
