Fontaines DC - 'Here's the Thing'
Irish post-punks Fontaines DC drop anxiety-fuelled new single ‘Here’s the Thing’.
Irish quintet Fontaines D.C. shot onto the music scene with their debut record “Dogrel” in 2019 and their release trajectory hasn’t faltered since. In five years, they’ve released three albums (with a fourth on the way), with their most recent (“Skinty Fia”) winning ‘Best Rock Record’ (Libera Awards), and led to them snatching up the coveted title of NME’s ‘Best Band In The World’.
Comprised of life-long friends Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan (bass), and Tom Coll (drums), Fontaines D.C. have carved out their own unique corner in the music industry where modern post-punk meets emotive poeticism. Where 2024 is concerned, the band find themselves back and better than ever, with the year’s debut, “Starburster” being hailed as a bombastic return for the five-piece.
Following on from their nostalgic frolic around the illustrious streets of Madrid (“Favourite”), the third track to be plucked from their upcoming fourth record (“ROMANCE”), “Here’s The Thing” switches up the pace for an anxiety-fuelled cut.
Where the band’s earlier releases focus on antagonistic cuts (“Televised Mind”, “How Cold Love Is”), this newest exploration leads with grunge-tinged nail-biting guitar lines that build a soundscape not far removed from that of early 00’s pop-punk-adjacent outfits (think Weezer). The insistent instrumentation leaves behind the neater sounds of the other tracks to be released from “ROMANCE” and instead opts for grinding guitars and soaring, call-to-action vocals.
Talking on the track, Chatten notes; “It’s an anxious tune that twists and turns in what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness”.
“Here’s The Thing” is another exciting teaser ahead of “ROMANCE”, and doesn’t veer from the their well-established punk trajectory.
