The Lumineers - 'Same Old Song'
The Lumineers return with a new album announcement and new exhilarating single ‘Same Old Song’.
Alternative-folk duo The Lumineers have announced their upcoming fifth studio album ‘Automatic’, which is expected to release on February 14 on Dualtone. The group is made up of Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, and the two have managed to make significant moves in the music industry with chart-topping hits such as ‘Ho Hey’ and ‘Ophelia’. The 2x GRAMMY® Award-nominated band’s fifth studio album marks 20 years of songwriting between the two, and in Wesley Schultz’s words “explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, like the increasingly blurry line between what’s real and what’s not, and the variety of ways we numb ourselves while trying to combat both boredom and overstimulation”. The LP was recorded in less than a month, and as Schultz says, it is an album that feels “very much of this era”.
‘Same Old Song’ is a dynamic song which features an insistent and fast-paced beat. The lyrics are powerful and thought-provoking, and they seem to represent the deepest thoughts and struggles of the narrator. Schulz sings in metaphors with lines such as “The party has been done for hours, I’m laying on bathroom tile spilling all my guts below the throne” which uses the idea of vomiting at the base of a toilet due to being intoxicated as an allegory for the internal struggles of the narrator being revealed to another person.
The track is accompanied by a music video directed by filmmaker Anaïs LaRocca. It features Schultz and Fraites performing in front of a canvas which plays out different scenes, giving the impression of a VHS home movie. These projections provide a window into the mind and memories of Schultz and Fraites and visually manifests the song’s nostalgic and relatable lyrics.
The Lumineers have an exciting live schedule planned for 2025 alongside their new album release which includes performances at top-billed festivals and an EU/UK headline tour which is expected to debut on April 23 in Austria and then continue in arenas in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, among many other countries.
Beyond their music, The Lumineers have also dedicated themselves to causes such as (but not limited to) environmental sustainability, human rights and youth mental health. With significant festival appearances, an EU/UK tour and more dates planned for 2025, The Lumineers continue to simultaneously expand their audience while also building a lasting legacy rooted in creativity, advocacy and influence.
