Band Of The Week #309 - senses
This week's Band of the Week is Los Angeles duo senses - who have just released their new EP 'onto something' via Hopeless Records.
senses is a Los Angeles-based self-identifying “emo-friendly, punk-curious” band known for their explosive energy and soul-baring truth. Their music channels pain and frustration into catchy anthems that resonate with fans and has catapulted them into a packed first headline tour and joining multiple tours as support with artists like Charlotte Sands, Carlie Hanson, Leah Kate, Bailey Spinn and Boys LikeGirls. Recently signed to Hopeless Records, the band, led by Madison Taylor (vocals/guitar) and Nick Sampson (drums), has seen their fanbase grow rapidly, thanks in part to their emotionally charged live shows and viral live videos.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there senses, how are you? So your EP is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?
We are so good! Excited to finally have this EP out, these last two songs that dropped with it are truly special. Overall we're so proud of it and feel really great about how it turned out.
It is called ‘onto something' – what is the meaning behind that?
Onto something is a title of one of the songs on the EP that we had such a blast making, and overall just really embodied the overall feeling we get when listening to all the songs as a whole. We really feel like we're in such a great place musically, and there's a sense of hopefulness about it overall that we felt the phrase 'onto sometning' really captures.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
We recorded this with a few different producers at their respective studios! Skin was a particular fun one, because it started out with literally just the word 'skin' and we tried to just think of the most fun place we could take that one word and we love how it turned out. I think we sat there for a couple hours just really digging into where we could take such a simple word and build it into this visceral feeling.
What are the key influences behind the EP?
Emotionally the influence just comes from our lives and these different stages of a relationship whether that's romantic or otherwise, and what that looks like in these different vulnerable stages. From being obsessed with someone, to even more so, to those beginning butterflies and defining the relationship, to the troubles and heartache of it. I feel like we've all experience this wave of emotion through these stages of relationships.
If the EP could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Ooo honestly like any sort of coming of age romantic story. This isn't a move but I think the show Heartstopper would be a great fit for this EP
Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
You and I had such a deep connection to me (Madison) because of the way I started to right that song. There's so many lines I'm proud of but my favorite would be "what if you and I, we made it work in another life"
Now the EP is out there – what next for you?
More music! Haha we don't usually ever stop writing and are always looking forward to how else we can push ourselves and where we will go with our music. We like to test the boundaries and not tie ourselves down to anything specific so we'll just keep exploring that and creating more! And hopefully being on the road again soon. Our favorite part is meeting the fans and hearing them sing along
