Inspired #459 - Lusaint

Rising UK Soul talent Lusaint has just released her new single 'Waterfalls' - taken from her second EP, which is due out next year.

Growing up in Stretford, Greater Manchester, Lusaint never imagined a music career was possible. Inspired by her parents’ jazz and blues records, she started singing Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone covers in local bars before landing her breakout moment in 2019. Her version of En Vogue’s ‘Don’t Let Go’ became the UK’s most Shazamed song in a single day, followed by a viral take on Wicked Game that has since surpassed 30 million YouTube views.

‘Waterfalls’ showcase Lusaint's remarkable vocal range, pulsing with an electrifying, energetic groove- blended together by soul, jazz and pop. The track is met with Lusiant’s unmissable, signature soulful undertones that add depth and warmth to every note. Speaking on ‘Waterfalls’, Lusaint says: “It explores that bittersweet place between love and loss — when your mind says goodbye, but your soul still holds on”.

She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Nina Simone
Ella Fitzgerald
Adele
There's something so unique about all three of them but what stands out the most is their vocal presence and talent. They also have a really strong brand and identity and beautiful aura.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
La vie en rose … Edith Piaf is a huge inspiration for me and I watch this film a lot! Marion Cotillards performance is truly iconic.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Paris. It’s my favourite place to feel at home. I love the architecture, the fashion, the music. Every performance I’ve had there so far have been some of my favourites. Especially La Cigale!

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Ella Fitzgerald. Everything about her shows I’ve rewatched every time are so inspiring to me. I listen to her every day and always start my morning with her voice.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wanted to write more about feeling trapped in certain situations and understanding myself enough to know how to get out of them. Trusting my instincts and running with it

How would you like to inspire people?
I hope that my music voice and lyrics resonate with people. I hope to keep performing and having people at my shows who can take something away with them.
