Melanie C - ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong’
Melanie C was responsible for teaching an entire generation how to dance to unforgettable choreography as a member of the Spice Girls. Now, she simply wants her fans to keep on dancing.
Her latest single, 'What Could Possibly Go Wrong', brings back the energy of '90s pop songs with its catchy chorus and club vibe, which Melanie C has embraced ever since she started DJing around the world.
Recorded in Stockholm, ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong’ was written in collaboration with Klas Åhlund (Robyn, Kylie Minogue, Madonna) and Linnea Sodahl, known as NEA (Eiffel 65, Zara Larsson).
"What Could Possibly Go Wrong" is one of Melanie C's most authentic lyrics, embracing her fearless personality and her refusal to dwell on regrets. As she sings: 'When I make up my mind, there's no stopping or rewinding. Let's kill all the lights. In the darkness, you tell me… What could possibly go wrong?'
“We had a lot of fun working on this song and discussing the light and shade of music and life. It's a tongue in cheek look on taking risks and trusting yourself to take that leap anyway. I think a lot of people will relate!”, she says.
The track is the second single from her forthcoming ninth studio album, Sweat, which marks a new era for Melanie C, bringing pop rhythms to life through dance beats and synths.
As the title suggests, the album was created with the intention of getting fans sweating — whether on the dancefloor, in their living rooms or during workouts.
Raves and dance music were part of Melanie C’s life long before the Spice Girls. She was part of a group called “The F**king Yeah Four”, who danced their way through the Costa Brava rave scene in the early '90s.
When Melanie C released her first solo album, Northern Star, in 1999, many expected her to continue her career as a pop singer, which she did for many years.
In 2020, Melanie C finally started adding more dance beats to her tracks. On stage, she started performing as both a singer and a DJ. “I love being able to mix anything I want. You can take things apart and build them again, just like in life.”
With ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong’, she has fully embraced all aspects of herself: the DJ, the Sporty Spice, and the singer with one of the most unique voices.
“I’ve done a lot of soul-searching,” she says. “Now I just want to have some fun and get people dancing again.”
Sweat is set to be released in May and features 13 tracks aiming to capture the spirit of a generation that found itself on the dancefloor, just like Melanie C. “When we were young every weekend we’d go out dancing all night long,” she recalls. “In a room of friendly strangers we found the place where we belong.”
Following the release, Melanie C will take Sweat to exclusive release parties around the UK and Europe. “There are so many horrific things going on in the world, when you make pop and dance music, it can seem almost churlish. But music is what gets me through tough moments. I’m really happy I am bringing out a joyful record at a very dark time.”
