Artist Of The Week #330 - Gia Ford
This week's Artist Of The Week is alt-pop singer-songwriter Gia Ford - who has just released her incredible sophomore album 'A Room Within A Room' via Chrysalis Records.
On her second album, A Room Within A Room, Gia explores themes of humanity, connection, identity, and the importance of preserving a sense of imperfection and authenticity in an increasingly digital world. The album was created with a focus on capturing the feeling of real people making music together, with organic textures, emotional depth, and a strong sense of atmosphere. Sonically, the album shifts through everything from soul to pop, indie and rock.
Gia took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.
Hey there Gia Ford, how are you? So your album is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?
Hello! I'm well thank you. It feels great to have the music out, that's the point - to have it listened to!
It is called 'A Room Within A Room' – what is the meaning behind that?
It was quite convoluted really, but felt right thematically. The songs are all in some way about our internal, single consciousnesses and perceptions of the world and ourselves. So the room is sort of a metaphor for single consciousness within a larger, shared one. In a way it's a glimpse into my room, my inner monologue.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
It was recorded in Kent, in a studio near Chatham. The house attached is also an AirBnB. There had been some difficulty booking slots, so one time we ended up double booking with a bridal party in the main house. We had to creep around the side gate, and sleep in the barn at the bottom of the garden. But there was a telly we somehow managed to get working, and we watched 'Extras' until the connection faltered while the ladies in the house sang at increasing volumes throughout the night. My producer had food poisoning too, that time. It was beautiful.
What are the key influences behind the album?
Late Bowie, like Blackstar and Heathen... Scott Walker, U2...on the folkier side, it's The Mamas & The Papas, The Rolling Stones, Linda Perhacs, White Album-era Beatles. Loads!
If the album could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Hm. It'd have to be quite musically driven..probably something like Trainspotting, just for its variation. The album has a plethora of emotions on it, and grapples with feeling lost in the world, but it wouldn't work with a quiet European film I don't think. It's too cinematic. Perhaps parts of it could work for something akin to Suspiria too.
Do you have a favourite lyric on the album? If so, which one and why?
'In the morning, like an angel, I feel you/and you walk like a saint, with love' on track one, 'Liberty'. I think it perfectly expresses the mystery of nature and how it breathes quiet and knowing around us. I suppose it represents the feeling of the universe watching us, which is what I wanted to express.
Now the album is out there – what next for you?
Hopefully just the chance to keep writing, recording, playing music to crowds of people and seeing more of the planet while we still can.
