Band To Check Out: The Moth & The Flame - 'Live While I Breathe' (Single)

For me, it was hard to not think of  the Aimee Mann lyrics, "the moth don't care when he sees the flame,he might get burned, but he's in the game, and once he's in, he can't go back, he'll beat his wings 'til he burns them black." in relation to  The Moth & The Flame . And no, not just because of the obvious link between the lyrics and their band name. But we'll get to that later.

Wacky synths open 'Live While I Breathe' and are intermittently present throughout. The vocals are lower range; bold and dramatic, sung with determination. The instrumentation is  melodic, anthemic, atmospheric. Gentle guitar strums are paired with fiercer arrangements; clashing drums, fuzzy bass lines. The production is adventurous. The hooks are of an epic indie rock sing-along proportion.

'Live While I Breathe' is lyrically built out of fighting talk. The narrator is squaring up for the biggest battle of their life. To simply, "live while I breathe".  Like the moth Mann sings about, The Moth & The Flame have been burned, but they're in the game. They're not backing down. They're beating their wings until they turn them black.

Words of Karla Harris

'Live While I Breathe' is taken from the band's debut album, 'Young & Unafraid', out now.
