Album Review: Mt. Joy - 'Mt. Joy'

Indie folk rockers Mt. Joy share their self titled debut album and it's the perfect album to get you ready for the summer festival season ahead.

Los Angeles via Philadelphia outfit Mt. Joy have really been proving themselves to be one of the most exciting & critically acclaimed indie folk groups since Fleet Foxes. Achieving a Top 20 single on the Triple A Radio Charts with their hit single ‘Silver Lining’, a National TV Debut on Conan & tipped as ‘new folk-heroes’ by Rolling Stone, you can see why they are taking the indie folk scene by storm.

Produced by Jon Gilbert, Mt. Wolf's debut album opens with a song called ‘I’m Your Wreck’ which sets the tone for the album & also shows the great vocals of Matt Quinn. The album then goes onto some more new material like ‘Dirty Love’ which is a great mid tempo song that breaks up the album from some of the popular explosive singles like ‘Silver Lining’.

For me the highlights of the album are the songs ‘Jenny Jenkins’ & hit single ‘Astrovan’. These songs  really stand out for me as lyrically heart warming & also songs that can break out of the alternative into the mainstream audiences. With ‘Astrovan’ already having over 5 million streams on Spotify it would very much surprise me if it didn’t hit 30 million streams by the end of the year.

Mt.Joy’s debut album is so important & really puts the band up there as the new pioneers of indie folk rock, a very strong debut album. Would highly recommend for any fans of Father John Misty & Bon Iver.
