EP Review: Hatchie - ‘Sugar and Spice’
Australian born musician Hatchie has blessed our ears with her debut EP, ‘Sugar and Spice’, perfect for anyone who is a lover of 90s synth-pop. It is a perfectly blended array of hearty goodness. Ever since we heard Hatchie’s new single ‘Sleep’ I knew that the debut EP would not disappoint. This five piece EP titled, ‘Sugar and Spice’ is fun, fresh and vibrant, perfect for anyone who loves to dabble across genres and try something new.
Hatchie is a modern, fresh take on the classic 90s sound. This EP contains four previously released singles, ‘Sugar and Spice’, ‘Sleep’, ‘Try’ and ‘Sure’ which are absolute crackers. These songs satisfy those who love anything that incorporates synths, there is such a groovy pop nature to this girl which is contagious. The title track ‘Sugar and Spice’ has racked up nearly half a million listens already, which is unsurprising due to the incredibly catchy nature. The whole EP has a wonderful, dream like nature which is so relaxing to listen to.
Hatchie draws inspiration from love and relationships, the whole world wind of emotions and feelings that go along with the experience: “I wanted these songs to sound lush, sparkly, and recreate euphoric feelings I experienced falling in love for the first time. I reworked my demos with Joe Agius, whose production and writing additions achieved the perfect sound I was searching for, giving me confidence to start taking the songs more seriously and continue writing… The songs on ‘Sugar & Spice’ were all written without much thought or pressure from myself or anyone else, allowing me to lay my feelings out like I’ve never done before.”
The newest track from Hatchie which completes the already existing line up is that of, ‘Bad Guy’, which begins with a slightly darker nature and sound than her other work. The track starts slow, however gradually builds with the addition of layered notes and rhythms. The whole EP works beautifully as a collective, there are different elements which pull on so many different heart strings, with the incorporation of beautiful music videos which tie alongside the individual single releases.
Personal highlights from this EP is the song ‘Try’, this song in particular has a very calming and relaxed nature about it. The song builds very gradually, with the same melody running throughout, however the metallic nature of Hatchie’s voice suck the listener in, making the entire song truly addictive.
If you fancy some new music to listen to and love a bit of synth-pop then definitely give this girl a listen, she is going places and you are going to want to go along for the ride.
