Deep State – ‘Under the Gun’

Raw, simple, beautiful – three reasons why Deep State’s ‘Under the Gun’ is your new favourite song.

‘Under the Gun’ is a fantastic song. Deep State capture the feeling of the post punk/garage rock revival of bands such as The Strokes, The Libertines and early Kings of Leon – from the tones to the attitude. It’s so raw and stripped-back, ‘Under the Gun’ goes back to times when rock n’ roll was simple and all about energy and cool guitar riffs. But there is an element of the Heartland punk of The Gaslight Anthem and melancholic beauty of Sharks, particularly in the guitar solo towards the end of the song. Each note tugs at the heartstrings whilst the band crash along with complete oblivion and a no-fucks-given attitude.

The band, instrumentally, are tight. But they play with such passion and intensity that ‘Under the Gun’ could explode into a great ball of fire. The drums sound like a boxer training on the punch bag, and the hypnotic lead guitar lines almost sounds as if it’s out of tune. This just proves that Deep State give 110% in each song and performance.

Deep State are great and have real potential, and they could be the next big American band to bless our speakers.
