The Music That Made Me #0001 - Jealous of the Birds
Bowie obsessions and singing along to Wheatus while driving in her sister's car, Jealous of the Birds talks to us about the music that shaped her.
What was the first song you listened to?
One of the first songs I vividly remember singing with my sisters in the car when I was four was Wheatus’ ‘Teenage Dirtbag’. We tried to mimic Brendan B. Brown’s nasally vocals and would get really into it. Pop punk gold. The dynamics are huge.
Which album is your guilty pleasure?
ABBA’s entire discography. When I was on tour with Divine Comedy, I’d blast a playlist of all their hits along the motorway, much to my manager’s embarrassment/amusement.
What album do you wish you wrote?
‘Blue’ by Joni Mitchell. That record has excellence and emotional depth of stellar proportions in every single song. I haven’t once returned to it and regretted listening.
What album gets you dancing?
David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ LP, of course. The Bowie obsession is inexhaustible.
Which album do you think describes you most as a person?
Fleet Foxes’ ‘Helplessness Blues’ LP and it’s difficult for me to articulate why. There is something embedded in the imagery, sense of melody and harmony, and the themes of each song that make me feel like a tuning fork that’s just been struck.
What is your favourite song this year?
Childish Gambino’s ‘This Is America’.
Jealous of the Birds has release her new single 'Russian Doll' and is out now now. Her album 'The Moths Of What I Want Will Eat Me In My Sleep' is out the 13th July 2018 via Hand in Hive.
