The Coathangers - 'Bimbo'

Atlanta's powerhouse trio, The Coathangers have just released the opening track to their upcoming sixth album, 'The Devil You Know'.

Whilst most famous for their raucous punk sound, The Coathangers have taken a different approach to the songs on their new album; accepting that each musician excels in a specific style of music and allowing themselves to become more of a songwriting unit by meshing their signature styles together. The newest single 'Bimbo' is unlike The Coathangers' usual sound. It is "a bittersweet note on love, self preservation and letting go." According to guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel, it was actually the "easiest song to be written, telling two sides of the story".

'Bimbo' sees a softening and dip in pace, compared to what we are used to hearing from The Coathangers; it actually borders on the lines of dreamy-pop. Don't let yourself be shocked by the change, though, as in the choruses the pedals seem to come back out, and that familiar visceral tone starts to seep through again. What strikes me about 'Bimbo' is the contrast between verse and chorus. Not specifically the difference in sound, but a difference that seems to harness masculine and feminine energy. In the verses, there's a winding bass line reminiscent of The Strokes, with sweet girlish vocals, and in the chorus you have the rattling guitars and more rugged vocals.

It is refreshing to hear a different side to The Coathangers, and 'The Devil You Know' which is released on 8th March via Suicide Squeeze, promises to deliver.
