Kita Menari - 'Pretty Sure'
Kita Menari is the brainchild of Micha de Jonge. After a near death experience whilst scuba diving, Jonge went out partying and found the words ‘Kita Menari’ written on a piece of paper in his pocket, translating to ‘we dance’. After what must’ve been a crazy 24 hours, could there be a better way to inspire your creativity?
For those who aren’t already familiar with Kita Menari, they have a timeless sound that contains many elements of disco, funk and pop, with the added element of youthful lyrics. There is a vibrancy that comes from head-bopping guitar riffs, bass lines that give you the infamous bass face and Jonge’s vocal tone that is velvety and has a really good range. Think of The 1975 mixed with a boyband, who have based their sound around the experiences of a summer spent in a hot country having the time of their life, whilst they are at the time in their lives where there is a lack of responsibility and repercussions.
‘Pretty Sure’ is dreamy synth-pop with an element of 80’s guitar littered throughout, as a kind of grounding to the elevation that Jonge’s voice takes you on. There’s been an influx of 80’s inspired songs in the last couple of years – the cinematic quality about the sound erupts into colourful imagery of pure joy and the feeling of being unattached and carefree, is undeniable infectious. It is no wonder that Jonge has found his sound, within this style of music. Jonge says; “It’s like having an angel on one shoulder telling you to go for it while a demon sits on the other telling you it’s not good enough. I wanted there to be a sonic build throughout the whole song that would erupt […] as a sign of letting that fear go and having creativity burst free.”
Kita Menari will play their most important show to date, at Eurosonic on 19thJanuary.
