Jade Bird - ‘I Get No Joy’
It is really starting to seem as though Jade Bird can do no wrong, and is incapable of releasing a bad song. Following on from the boot-stomping, two-step pace of ‘Uh-Huh’ and ‘Love Has All Been Done Before’, Jade is back with another banger that comes in the form of ‘I Get No Joy’.
Jade explains that the “song is about the stream of thought that runs through your head at all times as an overthinker”. The verses of the song take on the form of spoken word poetry, with dizzying lyrics that show the precise control she has over the intonation in her voice, whereas the chorus is laden with that raspy soprano, that we all know and love. “How many days a week do you feel electric, connected, unexpectedly affected. What do you need?” asks Jade, in an impassioned cry for seeking out something more. There is a distinct old-school character about Jade’s voice that is reminiscent of some incredible female musicians such as Janis Joplin and Sheryl Crow, who also have similar styles of music. Jade has steadfastly put herself in amongst the greats, and she still has a long way to go.
