Weyes Blood’s first release since 2016 has its eyes firmly set on the stars. ‘Andromeda’ is a glistening, widescreen affair that feels like what would happen if Laura Marling fronted Florence And The Machine.

There’s a sense of yearning, a search for meaning in the skies that may turn out to be fruitless yet is imbued with hope nonetheless. “I dare you to try” sings Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Mering) seemingly daring herself to seek an emotional connection, no matter how hard a task that may seem.

Woozy slide guitar and strings bring a sprinkle of Americana a la Lana Del Rey, albeit with more sci-fi wonderment than Hollywood glamour. Expansive yet delicate, the end result is a spellbinding exploration of opening oneself up to the potential for love told through the lens of the Hubble telescope. It’s the most celestial exploration of dating ever set to song, but unlike setting your Tinder swiping location as the Milky Way, it’s an approach that works. The world of romance can be hopelessly mundane, yet Weyes Blood captures the excitement and mystique that drove the poets to distraction.
