Album Review: Cigarettes After Sex - 'Cry'

Cigarettes After Sex have returned with their highly anticipated 2nd album Cry which focuses on the many complexities of love.

After their critically acclaimed first album Cigarettes After Sex pick up where they left off creating a wonderful body of work which is so emotive & thoughtful. Although Cigarettes After Sex have a distinct shoegaze sound to their music it’s the experimenting in lyrics & tones which make every song so different from each other. There has also been a development in the bands style, their debut was more an album generating ideas where as Cry is a album based entirely round Love.

The album starts with the song Don’t let me go which is just so elegant and is focused on losing & regaining love, the chorus & guitar solo perfectly connect for this type of song. This then follows with arguably the highlight of the album in ‘Kiss It Off Me’ which is so lustful & is delivered impeccably by Greg Gonzalez vocals & song writing, if there was a song to sum up this album is would be ‘Kiss it Off Me’.

Another highlight of ‘Cry’ is the song ‘Touch’ which is a song that not only focuses on the physical attraction but the emotional connection you have with someone, as for artistic sound this is also probably the most fluent & consistent on the record. Lead single ‘Heavenly’ & album title track ‘Cry’ are also sublime tracks which definitely play there part in this emotional album. It will be very hard to find an album which you can relate & connect to more then ‘Cry’, truly outstanding.
