Introducing #0100 - Rosie Shaw
Every once in a while something stumbles into your headphones that just quick simply blows you away, that is the best way to describe our experience of Rosie Shaw. She took a moment to talk to us about her new single ‘In Bloom’ and her vintage soul.
Your new track ‘In Bloom’ is out now, what is the track about?
In Bloom was written around this time last year. The track is about feeling yourself again and blossoming after a break up. It was nice to just sit by myself on the piano and write about something that I was going through then and there- I think that is why the song is so raw sounding.
There is quite a vintage vibe to your sound, what sort of music do you draw on for inspiration?
I have always loved artists such as The Supremes and Aretha Franklin, I just love how timeless it is. I think that is something I have always tried to think about when it comes to making music, especially in the production elements of my songs, I want my music to still be listened to in years to come!
Based in Oxford, what do you like to do for kicks?
There are so many good independent venues in and around Oxford, I love going to gigs and open mic nights to discover new music. There’s also a lot of good festivals going on, Truck Festival is great.
Is there much of a jazz scene around there? If so, where do you go?
There’s some good jam nights. I’ve seen some amazing musicians play at small open mics, it’s great for inspiration. When I’m In London I try to go to Ronnie Scott’s when I can, Its one of my favourite places.
The expression ‘an old soul trapped in a young body’ springs to mind when it comes to your music, if you could go back to any period of music, which would you pick? And why?
Thank you! I think it would be the 60’s. Although I love music from the 90’s as well. I take a lot of inspiration from both.
Now the track is out there, what next? What are your plans for the next few months?
I’m currently writing and recording an EP that will be released next year which is super exciting. I plan to gig a lot more in London and continue writing as much as possible!
