Mush – ‘Eat the Etiquette’

Intricacy, fury, and borderline insanity.

Leeds-based Mush have released their first taste of their upcoming debut album in ‘Eat the Etiquette’. The song carries a lot of drive and energy without being heavy. The guitars aren’t overly distorted, the vocals wail but never scream, and the drums run like clockwork.

‘Eat the Etiquette’ begins with a strange intro with plenty of edge to catch any keen ear for interesting music. It almost sounds like its being played backwards whilst the instruments are slowly melting. Mush then launch into a straight forward riff and beat where the stream of conscious rant on the “use of ‘common sense’ as a societal weapon” begins. Despite the lack of a ‘traditional’ chorus, there are plenty of hooks to get your teeth into, vocally and on the guitars. ‘Eat the Etiquette’ ends as bizarrely as it began. The 70s New York CBGB sound comes to mind, particularly Richard Hell and the Voidoids (think ‘Love Comes in Spurts’, ‘Down at the Rock n’ Roll Club’). Just when you think you’ve heard all the great new bands of 2019, another one comes along to blow you away. I anticipate the album will be one to keep an ear out for.
