Causeway Youth - 'Places'

Singapore-based duo Causeway Youth share emotionally driven, atmospheric indie rock on affecting single, ‘Places’

Opening with a chugging drum rhythm and and short, swooping guitar melodies, ‘Places’ opens with a cool, calm rocky atmospheric rolling into an emotionally driven song that veils melancholia in lively, playful, chiming indie rock arrangements. In fact, there’s a big nod to shivering post rock influences in the lovely textures of the track which heightens the emotion of the piece, especially on the track’s instrumental breaks.

Vocally, there’s a sense of sorrow delivered in a subdued emo, pop rock vocal that impacts beautifully as Causeway Youth explores the concept of letting go of a relationship and subsequently the plans you made together, as the duo (Jazreel-Anne, and Esther) explains:

”The initial idea of 'Places' was birthed from a Word Document on Google Drive created by past lovers who listed places to go to. Now that it's all over between them, thrashing the document helps to remind oneself that there's nothing left in these places and it's time to move on”.

’Places’ fades out on ambient synth tones that provides an ethereal ending, as if Causeway Youth are finally shaking the ghosts of the past in their lyrical theme. A really sincere offering that is equally touching as it is exhilarating.
