Orchards - 'Sooner'

Orchards - 2019 01 - MAIN PRESS SHOT.jpg

The glittery, mathy indie pop of Orchards has been one of Brighton’s best new exports for a few years now and they’ve just given us their latest shipment, ‘Sooner’. This is their first material since March’s ‘Young/ Mature Me’ double A-side single, dropping not long after the end of their tour with Pom Poko. Speaking of tours, the band has also announced a new headline tour taking place next April!

The band call ‘Sooner’ a nostalgic, reminiscing kind of song and I get that from the opening. A tight, echoey guitar riff and skittering electronic percussion, bouncing round the soundscape, provide plenty of earcandy. The beat soon gives way to a real kit and the bass joins with it, both locked in tight and helping build towards the chorus. That chorus hits like a wave with floating melody lines and a sing along hook propel the track onward. It only gets better each time it comes around. The bridge drops things out to give some atmosphere before it gets building again. The brief pause before the last chorus bursts in really makes it hit that bit more too.

‘Sooner’ has all the things I’ve loved about Orchards. The often otherworldly guitars, the solid rhythm section and soaring vocals that just make you sing along. The production of the track is a hit with me too, giving the song just what it needs. With that newly announced headline tour, Sooner is poised and ready to get crowds across the country bouncing.

Orchards’ headline tour will be taking the band across the UK and Europe April 2020, bringing a live show that I can’t recommend enough after seeing the band on their last tour supporting Pom Poko. Full dates are below.
