The Artist Explains: Birthh - 'Yello / Concrete'

Rising star Birthh speaks to us about her gritty layered visuals for current single ‘Yello / Concrete’ which psychedelically sees her become one with fire and stone.

Where was the video for ‘Yello/Concrete' filmed?
It was filmed in Italy 10 minutes away from the house I grew up in, it’s such a pretty place, I’ve always considered it to be my secret spot for thinking and contemplating beauty in life and I’m happy I got to show it to more people.

How does the video connect with the song?
The colours I used are exactly the colours I see when I’m listening to Yello, the texture of the rock is visually very similar to the way I perceive the beat and the clarinets/pads have always reminded me of both fire and air. In general I like combining elements that are often considered to be on the opposite side of a spectrum, like little rocky mountain and rockets flying in the sky.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
The scene where I’m sitting on an armchair was the craziest to film, me and Erica (who filmed most of the video) had to walk all the way up to the hill while goofily trying to hold the armchair. I also fell at a certain point, it was a bit intense but also very funny.

Can you tell us about the ideas/themes/imagery used?
As I was previously mentioning there are loads of elements that portray different instruments and sounds that make up the song. I especially liked using fire cause it’s usually perceived as a destructive element but in this case it’s quite the opposite.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
I made this video as an extension of the song itself, I really love it when music videos enrich songs and let viewers understand a little bit more about what we see and how we perceive it, it adds to the listening experience and enhances the essence of the song.
