South East London rapper and producer Theodor Black has released his new track ‘Weekends’, which is about the ideas of youthful romance and young love. He took a moment to talk to us about Frank Ocean, feeling at peace in Paris and all things that inspire him.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Solange. I’ve been listening to all of them for years, and solange only quite recently, but all of their music has had such a huge impact on me and the type of stuff I make. Each individual has such a unique sound and presence.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Larry Clark’s “Kids”. I think it’s one of the most relevant films of our generation, in terms of youth culture. It’s a raw representation of the realities of growing up in an urban environment, post decay. It’s very relatable in those regards

What city do you find the most inspiring?
Definitely Paris. I feel very at peace in that space, albeit all of its flaws, Parisians are more expressive than Londoners and I love that, I like when people let you know how they feel regardless if you like it or not. I think all artists should do a mass migration and take up residency in Paris it’d be sick.

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I’d say my mum, she’s my genuine homie, and despite all of our quarrels she always speaks truth and keeps me in check when I get a bit ahead of myself. Plus she’s the reason why I am the person I am today and I’d say I’m a pretty chill guy.

How would you like to inspire people?
I guess I’d like to inspire people to be themselves and to express themselves how they see fit. The world has too many rules telling you to do this and that, just think for yourself, love yourself and show genuine love and pursue your dreams
And you’ll find what it is that you’re looking for.
