Wives - 'Walking Past Nirvana'
WIVES are bringing back a US 80s alternative vibe for those who missed it the first time around.
‘Walking Past Nirvana’ is a moody and intense piece. It’s sludgey and doom-sounding drone-like vibe instantly recalls the grunge scene and sound. However, Jay Beach’s vocals are almost like a psycho whispering in your ear a bit like Nick Cave fronting his Grinderman project. But once the chorus comes in, you will hear Black Francis and in the second verse a Joey Santiago-esque guitar riff. WIVES may very well be today’s Pixies. And it’s excellent.
I don’t know what it is specifically, but ‘Walking Past Nirvana’ is heavy and, again, an extremely intense single. Which is weird considering the tempo never accelerates; the guitars aren’t overly distorted, and the vocals never exceed beyond a half-hearted howl. It’s a strange feeling WIVES create here and will get you putting the song on repeat over and over again. And I promise you that you won’t get bored. I guarantee it.
