Johnny Kills - 'I Feel Like'
Scuzz pop anyone?
The first taster ahead of the release of their debut EP, ‘I Feel Like’ is a scuzzy and quirky pop tune by Johnny Kills. It’s weird from the start with an almost backwards riff. ‘I Feel Like’ contradicts itself with the pop ‘la la la’ throughout the song, which is immediately followed by bizarre fuzzy noise that sounds like a chainsaw at times. It’s juvenile, but it’s brilliant. The EP, of which ‘I Feel Like’ features is strewn with the panic of impending adulthood, so maybe Johnny Kills is delaying this process with the childish and strange.
But ‘I Feel Like’ isn’t here to piss people off. Yes, the solo sounds like a machine in a frenzy (again, super cool) but the vocals are made up of pop hooks and the bass and drums intertwine with each other in such a way that the song has an indie/post-punk dance feel to it. ‘I Feel Like’ is a song for the nerds to analyse and appreciate, but it’s also for those that just want an exciting song to dance to.
