Lauran Hibberd - 'Frankie’s Girlfriend'

Dowsed in feels from all of our favourite American high-school films; Lauran Hibberd’s latest single ‘Frankie’s Girlfriend’ tells the story about the baggage of bitchiness and insecurity that goes hand in hand with having friends of the opposite sex – specifically when they’re in relationships.

Hibberd’s vocals are saccharine as always, but there’s a subtle sharpness to the delivery in ‘Frankie’s Girlfriend’. Given that the song was written after she had a ‘weird dream’ about a friend – whose girlfriend was less than please to find out – it’s no surprise to hear a little tension in her voice. “Now I can’t sleep at night / too scared to close my eyes / I’m going crazy / this psychopath is ruining my life” is the catchy refrain that holds together one of Hibberd’s best songs to date. She may only have released a handful of songs, but Hibberd is quickly climbing to the top of our ‘ones to watch’ list. Her song-writing style is the perfect amalgamation of candid, carefree and catchy, which makes the news on the release of her debut EP all the more exciting.
