DROOGS – ‘Make You Laugh’
They’ll definitely make you laugh.
‘Make You Laugh’ is the debut single from Bristolian punks DROOGS. Consider the song title, their name a reference to A Clockwork Orange and being inspired by IDLES, you get what it says on the tin – a ballsy punk banger with a comedic slant. But DROOGS aren’t a comedy band. Think of the funny Chuckle Brothers side of Slaves or the funny lines in Crapsons, or even Sleaford Mods.
This is slacker punk at its finest. FIDLAR, but a very British delinquent take on it. The vocals are sarcastic, John Lydon style, and the lyrics are just plain funny: “I can’t cook/I can’t clean/But I can eat a microwave meal/And I can clean my bong”. This is snarled over a simple bass and drum beat. The chorus goes into big dirty powerchords under “I can make you laugh” whilst the backing vocals are similar to Slaves’ Laurie Vincent’s. A screeching yet simple guitar solo just adds more to simple yet effective slacker approach.
If you like guitar music with power and energy, but want something a little light-hearted with humorous lyrics, then keep an ear out for DROOGS.
