Peckam via Falmouth’s Moreish Idols talk us through new single ‘Mobile Phone’, ahead of their show at London’s Shacklewell Arms next month.

Your track 'Mobile Phone' is out now, what is the meaning behind the title?
...

What is the inspiration behind the song?
Always being on our mobile phones… But to be honest, a lot of thought went behind this song. We stopped playing it for a while because it never sounded quite right but after leaving the bubble of Falmouth, we gauged a better idea of what the sound needed to be. Each member comes from a different musical background, Caspar loving dance music, Tom loving the likes of LCD Sound System and Vulfpeck, Jude being a bit of a shoegazer, Sol loving rock n roll and Dylan coming from the planet of jazz. Once we were settled up in London, we smushed all of these influences together and this is what came out.

Where was the track recorded? Are there any behind the scenes stories you are happy to share with us?
We recorded the drums at a great little studio called ‘The Attic Sounds’ in Peckham – Shout out to Dave for his engineering! After that, we recorded the rest at home. Jude made a makeshift vocal booth using his wardrobe and a shitload of duvets to record the sax and Tom and Sol bashed around on bottles and pans for the cowbell breakdown towards the end of the song. We were never meant to finish the song that way but Tom left the loop on whilst we were packing down a recording session and we realised that it sounded cool... had a bit of an A Certain Ratio feel to it. We saw it as an opportunity to strip it down to its bare bones so the listener can focus on Dylan and the percussion.
We always wanted to get a female voice for backing vocals in the song so Jude decided to ask his girlfriend Daisy (who'd never sung in front of anybody before) to her surprise as much as his, she smashed it after a couple of takes which you can hear in the second chorus. We're hopefully gonna hear more of her in the future.

What do you hope your listeners take from the song?
I’ve just been catfished.

Now the track is out there, what next? What are your plans for the next few months?
We got a couple of shows coming up over the next few weeks, some with friends which we’re super excited about and also our first Sofar Sounds session. We’re also due to be shooting a video for the track this weekend so expect that to be out at some point in the near future AND we got plenty more music to send out into the world… it’s just a matter of finding the time to record it, we’re all working lads ya see!
