The Duo Explains: Morning Midnight - 'Hearts A Mess'

Glasgow two-piece Morning Midnight battle the idea of self-doubt with new single ‘Hearts A Mess’, they took a moment to talk to us about the release.

Your track 'Heats A Mess'' is out now, what is the meaning behind the title?
It's just the idea of being open to your own emotions. I think a lot of people cut themselves off from their own feelings in order to help them maintain some kinda of emotional balance, if you don't let yourself become sad then that's surely a good thing right? WRONG! Im a big believer in being open to both the lows and the highs, and trying to control it just leaves you empty.

What is the inspiration behind the song?
I was just up late one night on my guitar after a whole day of fruitless writing, I was about to give up and go to bed and the whole song fell out of me in like 15 minutes. I've still got the original voice memo on my phone, pretty much all the lyrics were as you hear them in the finished recording -  maybe a switched a couple of lines around but not much more than that.

Where was the track recorded? Are there any behind the scenes stories you are happy to share with us?
We recorded it the night it was written, so it must have been 1 in morning after writing it at like 11 that night. There's a delay effect on my voice in the 2nd chorus ('and I don't think I can change') which was a complete accident. We basically just had me sing the song 3/4 times right the way through and those were the final takes, and those vocals in that chorus were just perfectly out of time with each other.

What do you hope your listeners take from the song?
Don't hide away from being sad, sometimes it can be good for you.

Now the track is out there, what next? What are your plans for the next few months?
We've got an EP that will be out towards the end of the year, and we're currently working on EP2! Will be playing a couple of shows over the next few months too, we can't wait to play these songs for people.
