Album Review: Twin Atlantic - 'POWER'
Twin Atlantic have wiped the slate clean in all senses of the word since their last LP, but 2020 presents a chance for the Scottish outfit to reinvent themselves with the release of their new album ‘POWER’.
A lot of things have changed since the release of ‘GLA’ in 2016, having parted ways with Red Bull Records and guitarist Barry McKenna stepping back into a solely touring role. Such a situation that certainly had the potential to sourly, but the Glaswegian’s have taken this chance to reinvent themselves and take back control of their artistry.
This us against the world situation that they were presented with firstly led to them transforming their rehearsal room in the heart of their home city into a full blown recording space, which snowballed into ‘POWER’.
Giving ‘POWER’ it’s first spin, it was clear that this was a very bold move for a band that is so associated with rock, but the 10 tracks are certainly a big payoff. From the opening synths of ‘Oh! Euphoria!’, you transported back to the 1980’s and left visualising bright, vivid and neon colours which Sam McTrusty has stated was a big inspiration for the new LP.
‘Barcelona’ perfectly represents the emotive side of the album, coupled with a striking chorus and brooding drum machine it’s certainly the stand out. The band’s new experimentation is a treat throughout, whether that is the bass-led ‘Volcano’ or the familiar rock feel of ‘Messiah’, you can tell that ‘POWER’ is the album have been wanting to make for some time and points to a bright future for a newly recharged Twin Atlantic.
‘POWER’ is available now on all major streaming platforms and Twin Atlantic will kick off their nationwide tour at Motherwell’s Concert Hall on March 3rd.
