Album Review: Blossoms – 'Foolish Loving Spaces'

Blossoms are back with third album ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ and it may just be their most fun one yet.

Blossoms have no doubt made a name for themselves as *the* band to beat in the indie realm with songs like ‘Charlemagne’, ‘There’s A Reason Why’ and ‘I Can’t Stand It’, their third album once again sees them asserting their dominance and skill as craftsmen of irresistible pop records and melodies that aim for the heart and never miss their target.

Hearing the first notes of opening track ‘If you think this is real life’, you already know this one’s a keeper. It’s fuzzy, light, dreamy indie pop to a T and Blossoms start the record as they mean to go on: fun and dancy. With heavy 80s vibes in ‘My Swimming Brain’ and overall infectious beats radiating positivity, the first half of ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ proves that this band knows how to continuously reinvent their sound, keep things fresh and exciting, without losing their Blossoms-ness.

Half-way through the record, ‘Romance, eh’ marks a turning point. This track directs the album into a more chilled sound-sphere. Riding on a more nostalgic, almost melancholic wave this part of the album seems like a nod to the heart wrenchingly beautiful tones of ‘Cool Like You’.  They haven’t lost any of their poignant songwriting and ability to wrap all facets of love into the dreamiest of melodies.

Closing out the album is title track ‘Like Gravity’ (see chorus: “We run around this town for days now, I’m in foolish loving spaces in my mind”), an absolute gem for all lovers of guitar heavy indie anthems that makes you wish for more.

With ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ Blossoms return strong as ever, combining the new with the old, and successfully defend their title of best indie band of the 21st century. There is not much more to say than well done, A**.
