Darragh Chaplin - 'Dance Until The Morning'
Darragh Chaplin churns out the latest release in his song-a-month campaign with smooth as butter, 80s-inspired alt-pop single ‘Dance Until The Morning’.
Darragh Chaplin delivers intimate alt pop that dances to the beat of your own heartbeat on his latest self-recorded and produced single, ‘Dance Until The Morning’. There’s a bubbly optimism to the track which opens with a cheeky playfulness, seeing fuzzy bass and crisp percussive rhythm punctured by samples of a ringing telephone and answer machine message as Chaplin confesses, “I don’t know why I expect you to call back when I won’t call you first“, providing his listener with immediate insight into an emotionally toxic relationship.
As the track develops, Chaplin lifts the mood with spiky guitar work and gleaming, shimmery and bubbly textures that will throw you back to your favourite HAIM songs. There’s a touch of the MUNA’s meets The 1975’s about the vocal melody and confessional storytelling, but there’s no mistaking Chaplin’s soothing, infectious vocal for anyone other than his own.
Thematically, the track explores the theme of ignoring the niggling gut feeling that something is wrong in a relationship as Chaplin explains, “when you're seeing everything through rose-tinted glasses, sometimes it's impossible to see what could possibly go wrong, all you want to do is keep going and hope it doesn't end.” highlighted through the optimistic lyrics, "You make me mad though, never show, keep it inside. I want it bad though, touch me close, just hold me tight".
There’s a real innocence and effortless likability to Chaplin’s music and ‘Dance Until The Morning’ is no exception. Here, Chaplin explores the fine line between naivety and knowing better through upbeat danceable indie hooks and retro, sunshine soaked melodies.
