Inspired #163 - Lupin
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Lupin! Jack Luppen’s debut solo adventure takes subverted pop and shoots it straight into your face! And tells you to embrace it. Absorb it! Intake every insane moment of it. He took a moment to talk about the inspirations behind the album and his music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Queens was my first introduction to rock music that was done in a really fresh way. The melodies in his stuff are always beautiful while the palettes beneath were heavy and crazy. Kevin Parker from Tame Impala combines nostalgic tones with songwriting from the future. I've always been inspired by that vibe. Alex G's prolific nature and messy maximal production has really shaped the way I work on my own music.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Donnie Darko. I love shit that looks and feels bleak with a bit of hope mixed in. I feel like I've always made "coming of age" music in the same way Darko is a coming of age film.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
Minneapolis. It's a fruitful artistic scene tucked away from everything else.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
Damon Albarn. From a career perspective he's always been able to reinvent what he's doing with every new project but still maintain an identifiable artistic presence.
What were your inspirations when writing the album?
Songs from the Big Chair by Tears for Fears was referenced again and again.
How would you like to inspire people?
I always want to inspire people to be weird. Artists don't have to play the game to be successful. Carve your own lane.
