EP Review: Matilda Mann – Because I Wanted You To Know
West London singer-songwriter Matilda Mann majors in storytelling on new EP ‘I Wanted You To Know’.
On five gorgeously melodic tracks, Matilda soundtracks the ups and downs of relationships. From the bittersweet longing of ‘Happy Anniversary, Stranger’ to the sparkling escapism of ‘Japan’, ‘Because I Wanted You To Know’ thrills with a multitude of romantic soundscapes and disarming vocals. Dreamy and emotive, the EP takes you on a journey of introspection. Though the record is brimming with stunningly delicate musings, tender ballad ‘Robbed’ is a clear standout moment. Its stripped back setting seems to make the world go quiet as Matilda’s vocals fill the empty spaces with unfiltered emotion and draw attention to her exceptionally sincere lyricism. “It’s not that I don’t like you, I just love him,” she sings and pulls the rug from under you in one quick motion. Dressed in nothing but acoustic guitars, ‘Robbed’ feels intimate and vulnerable, exposing Matilda’s most personal moments.
Following debut EP ‘If That Makes Sense’, ‘Because I Wanted You To Know’ paints a more refined image of Matilda’s endearing brand of sound – a sweeping take on folk that reinvents itself with every song. With a captivating songwriting style and truly mesmerising vocals, Matilda Mann is setting course for her rise to the top.
