Nisa - 'Bottom Feeder'
“There’s no shame in being humble” declares Nisa, on ‘Bottom Feeder’, the latest single taken from her forthcoming debut EP. It’s this simple statement which succeeds in summing up the sentiment beneath the track perfectly.
Built around jangly guitars and a subtle synth line, there’s echoes of bands such as Diet Cig or Waxahatchee. That’s not where similarities end, however. Much like the aforementioned, Nisa harbours an ability to take aim at any who draw her ire yet manages to mask each blow dealt with a frothy, poppy aesthetic, resulting in something irresistible, yet not without a punch.
Indeed, as far as tracks go ‘Bottom Feeder’ is both warm and optimistic, it’s sentiment, that of someone who takes from others in order to uplift themselves ultimately never being on your side, is one we can all appreciate, and find not so a sense of catharsis in, but at least a sense of solidarity that there are genuinely good people in the world, and not everyone is out for themselves.
Of course, such is the bands rosy exterior, that what some may see as sugary and irresistible, others may see as somewhat saccharine. Those that day, may be best sticking with Nisa’s offerings from earlier this year, all moodier in their delivery than this.
Either way, the fact remains that ‘Bottom Feeder’ is yet another example of Nisa’s quietly understated and utterly charming own brand of indie pop, and we can’t wait until her EP drops.
