Mitchel Evan - 'Leeches'

Virginia native, Mitchel Evan is back with new single ‘Leeches’, making his signature Americana sound just as potently beautiful as ever before.

With 2018’s album, ‘Nostalgia’, the songs were a perfect balance between gentle and passionate, dynamic in their tempos and dense instrumental arrangements, creating an honest exploration of human emotions. These same elements are not lost on Mitchel Evan’s music 2 years later.

‘Leeches’ is the latest track from the songwriter, packed with intricate drum patterns, twangs of interesting chord choices threaded throughout, and heavenly harmonies floating in the background; all highlighting how greatly him and his band work together.

Vocally, Evan’s at his best here, dancing across the track like it’s a classic he’s been singing for years and years. He plays with shifting between calmly serenading a lover in the verses, and then exploding into adoring displays of romance. Lyrically, he imagines embracing nature and a possible lover at the same time, “The river’s calling us, I’ll pick the leeches off”.

To intertwine the imagery of a beautiful person with the beautiful natural world surrounding them is difficult to do, but Evan makes it seem easy. And there’s a reason why: because he truly feels the things he writes. This is songwriting at its most honest, passionate, and delicately authentic. Be sure to check this track out, as one of the most heartfelt Americana tunes of the year.
