Slut Magic - 'Show Me'

Hypnotic and propulsive, ‘Show Me’ is the latest single from Brooklyn punks Slut Magic and oozes all the effortless cool you might expect from such a band.
Self-described as a “ransom note as music”, it’s both sultry and sleazy, though it’s you-show-me-yours-I’ll-show-you-mine message might not be what you think.

Arguably, this is Slut Magic at their most vulnerable, and a far cry from album tracks such as ‘God Is A Bad Dom’. Almost four minutes of steady post-punk, a steadfast duality of bass and drums makes the verses feel both sparse yet strangely weighty, while the choruses are bolstered by the addition of acerbic guitars coated in a liberal fuzz.

Indeed, while the instrumentation might well be brash and uncompromising, it’s interesting that it should be paired with such heart-on-sleeve lyricism, allowing Slut Magic to harbour a paradoxical feeling of confidence in their own vulnerability.

The final single to be taken from their recently released Trauma Queens record, ‘Show Me’ is an uncompromising offering, bringing to mind bands like Chastity Belt in its ability to effortlessly blend sugar-sweet pop with the unbridled energy of punk and the grittiness of grunge. A band you need to keep an eye on.
