Mulimba – 'Your Own Blood'

I can’t be the only one to think that Disney villains always get the better songs or that villains in general are strangely intriguing… There is something deeply, disturbingly attractive about the dark side and MULIMBA’s new single ‘Your Own Blood’ plays exactly to that aesthetic.

Hypnotic beats and dark, seductive vocals create an electric atmosphere interwoven with the haunting beauty of gospel elements and the distorted sound of strings. MULIMBA’s songwriting is equally as magnetic and broody as its sonics, talking about (low-key) toxic family dynamics – “I am the son of my mother, she taught me how to shout. Without the things I learned from her, I’d be dead in the ground. You fight the devil but it’s your own blood.”

Speaking about the song MULIMBA explains, “’Your Own Blood’ is about family. That could mean your family by blood, your best friend/close group of friends or ultimately just somebody that you care about deeply. I wrote ‘Your Own Blood’ whilst going through a rough patch with somebody very close to me, but even though we were both hurt by things we’d done and said to each other, we still had an unconditional love for each other. No matter what you’re going through, good or bad, family will always be there.”
