In Conversation With #086 - Jenny Plant
Following the release of her single ‘Coming Home’ - Jenny Plant has treated us to her stunning EP ‘New Moon’. She took a moment to talk to us about working with producer Maxwell Cook and how the EP came together.
So, the debut album is out now - how does it feel?
It feels so great to finally have this music out in the world. I have been working on some of these songs for a while, from recording the strings at AIR studios last August right up to remote recording the cello for Lullaby a few weeks ago. I wanted to make sure I had exactly the right sound to reflect me as an artist which I feel this completely does.
It is titled ‘New Moon’, does that hold a certain meaning to you?
The title New Moon reflects the elemental and ethereal feel of the music and the lyrics throughout. It also represents the narrative in the tracks that it is a new beginning, whether it is finally being able to accept yourself as you are or realising that the relationship you are in is not working, something is shifting a new beginning.
The production of the EP was done by Maxwell Cook, who has worked with some amazing names like Ellie Golding and Gabrielle Aplin, how did that partnership come about? And how was the whole experience?
I met Max a while back on a string session he was working on for Ellie Goulding. I happened to be there as I brought the musicians together and we stayed in touch from then on. Also, he happened to know a few friends so that is always a bonus. He is an extremely talented producer and musician and exactly the right fit for my music.
The EP feels almost like a thought process, reflecting on a new beginning. Is that what this EP is for you?
Yes, the EP is exactly that. Each song carries it’s own meaning but as a body of work it is a reflective piece. It moves from past experiences of relationships that needed to move on to finding that time in your life when you truly accept who you are and own it.
The EP ends with Lullbay which describes floating off to that dream state where there are no worries and you can relax and be who you want to be.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
I want the EP to feel soothing, one that can take you off to another world. It merges my love of singer-songwriters such as Birdy, Carole King, and Tom Odell with the mesmeric soundscapes of Enya and film soundtracks you can get lost in.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP, if so - which one and why?
I would say my favourite lyric is in Coming Home - ‘it’s taken a while for me to be me’. It sums up the struggle in owning yourself and be confident to show that to the world.
How does it feel to be releasing new music during the Covid-19 situation? Are you keeping motivated?
It has been strange releasing music during the Covid-19 situation especially as I can’t go out and perform the songs, but equally it has been a time where I have been able to stop and reflect and actually have the time to sit down and write new music with no distractions. We have all had to adjust in our own way; I think it is pretty cool though that through technology I was able to have lots of different musicians recording from different homes across Europe on the tracks.
It feels a bit unknown what will happen in the next few months, but we are all in it together and how good will that first gig feel!
