Oslo-based artist Selmer shares new single ‘Before You Marry A Person’ and reflects on young love.

A song about playground romances, ‘Before You Marry A Person’ boasts with dreamy melodies and youthful innocence – an attribute further intensified by co-writer Whose Rules whose child-like vocals join Selmer for the track’s bright choruses. Playful guitar lines reminiscent of the 70s create an air of nostalgia that gives the track its irresistibly catchy quality. The main selling point, however, is Selmer’s brilliant lyrical take on childhood relationships and the fact that, at nine years old, none of us had any idea of what we were talking about: “I don’t know how I will love and I do. Feelings I don’t know I don’t feel for you.”

Speaking about ‘Before You Marry A Person’, Selmer explains: “[It’s] a song about being in love as a kid and about overthinking the importance of relationships as a nine-year-old.” The result of that? “Not being able to realise how unlikely a childhood relationship will lead to a marriage.”
