Twist Helix - ‘Frida Kahlo’
Newcastle’s most intriguing musical act Twist Helix are gearing up for their new album with their infectious new single ‘Frida Kahlo’.
It has been a gradual rise for this trio over the past 4 years, showing relentless energy in their creativity which has garnered them a cult-like following in the North East and further afield. The three-piece are gearing up for the follow up to their 2018 debut ‘Ouseburn’, setting the scene for their new LP ‘Machinery’ in the right way with the electric ‘Louder’ and the synth-pop triumph of ‘Frida Kahlo’ setting the tone for the LP.
Lead vocalist Bea Garcia brings some Mediterranean zest to the anthem, dipping in and out of English and Spanish throughout the record which grips you from the off. Like the vocals, the sound of the record weaves through different influences with pop and electronic really showcasing everything that Twist Helix represents.
‘Frida Kahlo’ is a track about “identity” and how we “self-fashion” an image of ourselves for the online world and how our “mass consumption” of images takes away from the true understanding of ourselves. ‘Frida Kahlo’ is a great example of the truly unique sound of Twist Helix and sets up this North East band’s new album to be their best material yet.
