Grace Gillespie - 'Empty In The Capital'
London-based folk artist Grace Gillespie shares shiny new single, ‘Empty In The Capital’.
“It is what it is, not what it ought to be. Not exactly what you wanted, not exactly what you need but I’m comfortable with knowing that our consciousness is growing, learning to destroy ourselves and blame it on something else.” goes the opening verse of ‘Empty In The Capital’ and sets the scene for Grace Gillespie’s latest offering.
Wrapped into soaring folk-pop melodies and elevated by dreamy harmonies, her delicate, wistful vocals act as a beam of light separating the fog of isolation. A song that seems to reflect on the current state of the world, ‘Empty In The Capital’ outlines fears and frustrations of feeling stuck while trying to make the best of a bad situation but ultimately realising that we’re living in a messed up society – “But we’re comfortable with living while some other eyes are stinging like we’re comfortable with turning our faces to the sky.”
In an interview with Clash magazine, Grace explains: "'Empty In The Capital' is a realisation that this juxtaposition is at the heart of all of life. There is always suffering, and we are always perfecting a way to stick our head in the sand just to survive, I suppose." Maybe it’s time to change the way we operate.
