Polly Scattergood - 'Clouds'
Polly Scattergood shares ‘Clouds’ the dreamy third single taken from her new album, ‘In This Moment‘ which is out now!
Dense piano keys cut through static and subtle field samples on the intro to Polly Scattergood, ‘Clouds’, seeing the track stutter to life with intrigue. Scattergood’s vocal comes in with a light airy melancholy, ethereal and emotive but oddly soothing. There’s an expansiveness to the vocal melody that juxtaposes the heavier emotion and darker textures in the track’s production, seeing the song swell with a sense of hope on it’s beautiful chorus, “and the waves they roll, and the sea stays blue, and the sun it keeps on rising”
On the ideas behind the track Scattergood explains, “‘Clouds’ is about moving on and finding comfort in the constant movement of nature and the world around us. The verses hone in on specific moments and memories and then the chorus cuts to this widescreen vision of the moving ocean and the sun rising and finding peace in that constant life cycle.
I began writing Clouds with Jim Sclavunos from The Bad Seeds in my windowless studio in Camden, London. When I first started writing this song I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life and I remember Jim said "just keep creating, keep writing, keep moving onwards" I very much held onto that advice throughout this album process. A few months after starting "Clouds" I found myself with Glenn in Fuerteventura overlooking a volcano and the track we had started writing in Camden came into my head, I was feeling much more at peace and the rest of the song flowed out into its final form."
A surreal and affecting song with a timeless appeal, ‘Clouds’ reminds its listener to always look for grounding constants during times of change and emotional upheaval.
