Album Review: BLOXX – ‘Lie Out Loud’

In BLOXX’s debut, rock and pop collide to create an upbeat and energetic summer album.

Listening to this album makes me mourn the summer we never had. In upbeat tracks ‘Give me the Keys’ and ‘It Won’t Work Out’ you can almost feel the lyrics being shouted back by a buzzing crowd at a festival or packed-out gig (RIP 2020).

The album features the band’s recent hit singles like punchy title track ‘Lie Out Loud’, the grungier ‘Go Out With You’ and pop-infused ‘Off My Mind’.

“I’m a Cancer, so I’m a very emotional person - or so my girlfriend always tells me,” Fee Booth laughs. “I’m naturally very straightforward in my lyrics but I’ve really stepped it up a gear with the album. Because I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to sing about ‘Spoons for the rest of my career.”

And it’s true, the lyrically unrelenting intimacy and energy of each track is a highlight of the album. ‘5000 Miles’ tells the story of a long-distance relationship, ‘Changes’ expresses the helpless feeling of two people drifting apart and ‘What You Needed’, a track guided by an acoustic guitar, dwells on the feeling of not being enough for someone.

Booth states, “ultimately, we want to be that huge indie band.” Already having toured with the likes of The Wombats, Sundara Karma and Pale Waves, ‘Lie Out Loud’ is just the beginning for BLOXX.
