EP Review: KLEOPATRA – ‘MACHINA’

Rising dark pop android and self-confessed glitch in the system, KLEOPATRA, shares magnetic debut EP ‘MACHINA’.

Using the nationwide lockdown to her advantage, KLEOPATRA has spent the better part of the year in the studio perfecting her debut EP and it’s more than paid off. ‘MACHINA’ thrills with a multitude of electrifying soundscapes that welcome you into her digital universe. No two songs sound the same. Where opener ‘PRETTY BONES’ is all about big beats and soaring electronica, ‘XANAX’ paints the world in softer tones of subdued basslines and gentle synths. And just when you think you know where the journey is going, title track ‘MACHINA’ completely changes course with a dangerously hypnotic and distorted twist on electro pop. But what truly takes the crown are Kleo’s emotive vocals that bring her stunning lyricism to life with an irresistible force - “Here is where you forget me. Here is where you leave me behind,” she sings on ‘XANAX’, but this kind of talent is impossible to walk away from.

Impressive is an understatement. With a fresh take on dark pop and endless amounts of creative production, KLEOPATRA may just become one of the most exciting new artists this year has seen. At the very least, she is one to look out for in 2021. Get ready to join the cyber space revolution.
