Nineteen year old artist Morgan Reese has just released her latest single ‘not cool anymore’ via Empire. A pop anthem for anyone who has had a one-sided relationship where they like the individual more than that person likes them. Morgan took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
It changes pretty often depending on my mood but I’d say my consistent musical inspirations are Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Lauryn Hill. I love how they all play a significant role in the production of their songs, and incorporate layered vocals and ensemble instruments. Lauryn and Stevie especially have my heart with their creative and vivid lyricism.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I wouldn’t say there’s a specific film that inspires me, because I mostly watch romantic comedies. However, the drama and theatricality displayed in said rom-coms, is definitely something I try to emulate in my music. I like to “play up” the events that happen, in order to make a more interesting song for the listener.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Not to sound cliche but honestly, New York. I feel like there’s so many people from all different walks of life independently grinding and working towards their goals and I love that.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Steve Lacy. His start in the industry was very unique and showed how you can make great music with limited resources. I also produce my beats on Garageband and knowing that’s how he got started too is very encouraging.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I was spending all of my time thinking about someone who didn’t feel the same. I wrote this song as a way to break myself out of that mindset and move on. Musically, I was inspired by the heavy use of synths in 80s music, as well as the echoing toms.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to inspire people to always persevere in their passions and focus on what’s important to them.
