Introducing #191 - Etta Marcus
Let us introduce you to exciting newcomer Etta Marcus - who has just released her debut single ‘Hide & Seek’. A timeless, atmospheric indie-folk track via Platoon, who also released the opening remarks of Holly Humberston, Jorja Smith & Billie Eilish. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey Etta, how are you? So your debut track ‘Hide & Seek’ is here, how does it feel to have your first track finally out there?
Hey! I’m feeling pretty good thanks. I never knew how I would react on the day of release, but I now know that it’s possible to experience an adrenalin rush for a whole day. It’s exciting, its surreal, and I’m relieved that it’s been received so warmly.
What is the track about?
Hide & Seek grew out of a weird fear I had when I was younger, which was not being found or being forgotten about when hiding in a game of hide and seek. I was such a good hider that it did happen a few times! I ended up writing from the perspective of the seeker, who just won’t give up trying to find the one person left hiding. It became dark and obsessive pretty fast after realising how creepy it sounded. It’s a song that wishes it was romantic, but gradually unravels to be something quite sinister.
Born and bred in Brixton, what are your favorite things to do there?
Going into Pure Vinyl with my dad and treating ourselves to a record or two has to be one of my favourite things. I also love going to late night screenings at the Ritzy by myself, which sounds sad, but there’s something about a cinema with a few other nocturnal people inhabiting it that feels comforting to me!
What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
I could list so many, but thinking back to the kind of music that had an impact on me growing up, it would have to be artists like Jules Buckley, Everything But The Girl, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Alex Turner, Mazzy Star. I could go on!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Haunting, reflective, bittersweet.
Now the debut track is out there, what next for you?
I will also be playing my first show at The Social as part of Communion’s monthly club night on the 14th of October, where I’ll be playing a stripped down version of my EP.
