Calmness - 'Angel'
Toxic friendship and romantic confusion take the shape of a delightful bedroom pop ballad in Calmness’ new single ‘Angel’.
One of the most relatable situations in the human experience is fluently playing with the boundaries of the friend-zone. Most of us have, in more than just one occasion, been in love with someone who is unable to reciprocate our feelings but they still fancy entertaining the idea of having someone pursuing them. That’s exactly what Lisbon-based singer, songwriter and producer calmness explores in their new single ‘Angel’.
With their signature borderline dull guitar tones and soothing vocals at the forth front, the new track has a very cinematic taste to it which almost allows listeners to not only put themselves in the shoes of the artist but it also opens the door for remembering similar relationships.
In their own words, “‘Angel’ is a song about someone breaking the boundaries that they put on me. I was in love with them and they just wanted to be my friend but kept going on with the mixed signals and calling me by names they said we couldn’t call each other. It’s about being in love with someone emotionally unavailable who still craves your attention and treats you differently.”
Calmness certainly is living proof that we are living in the era of emo music revival, however, the incredibly unique soft-kid crossover they’re able to bring to the table allows for a rich sonic experience which is both very familiar yet unknown. Leaving us with a craving for more, it will not be long until Calmness releases their new album ‘don’t ask if I’m okay’, out on Nov 25. Drawing inspiration from their contemporaries Phoebe Bridgers Declan McKenna and Modern Baseball, the new body of work promises to be a truly authentic and heartfelt experience.
