Introducing #195 - Wynona

Let us introduce. you to bedroom-pop newcomers Wynona, who following the praise of their debut track - are back with their second single ‘Real World’. This song was written amongst the in-between moments of a turbulent year for Natalie & Rich. Using free time amongst travelling to shows, getting caught in overnight changes to the tier system of the UK lockdown and living in a friend’s secluded, 19th century country house hotel in the Lake District; each of the forthcoming releases display Wynona’s drive and determination in equal measure. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Wynona - how are you? So your track ‘Real world’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! We're pretty good thanks, you? We wrote the song in the middle of the winter lockdown & at the time I suppose I had lost my edge a bit because gigs & music were put on the back burner for musicians and I sort of lost who I was. I feel like there is a pressure out there in the world to fit into a 'perfect mold' or be one thing and stick to it.. and to be honest that's not me ..or us. So I started toying with the idea that I could be anything.. the good & the bad.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded at The Bookhouse Studio in South Bermondsey, shout out to Tom Hill. Yea, we actually got caught in overnight changes to the tier system of the UK lockdown and ended up staying in a friend’s secluded, 19th-century country house in the Lake District; We didn't really have anything on us other than Rich's guitar & a change of clothes, so we'd just hang out and write tunes whilst we were stranded up there for a few weeks, and that's when Real World started taking shape.

Where are you based? What are your favorite things to do there?
We live in Reading at the moment, I was saying to Rich yesterday how much I enjoy living here actually. We're making the most of being local to our families because we used to live on the other side of the world. We also love Korean food & there are some really good places in the city centre.

What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
Sheryl Crow's music & her story always continues to inspire me. The Cure, The Sundays, Fiona Apple & Alanis Morissette are definitely influences that we've been listening to on repeat the last year or so. We are also addicted to Beach Bunny, they followed us on insta a few months back when we put out our first single & I fan girl'd so hard... I'm still freaking out about that even now.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Pop music underpinned by nostalgic guitar with tuneful vocals that i'd like to hope covey my emotion in that moment, along with some candy-sweet hooks.
